40. Khadi As A Fashion Statement For India’s Future: 2

Gandhi’s quote “If we have the ‘khadi spirit’ in us, we would surround ourselves with simplicity in every walk of life. The ‘khadi spirit’ means infinite patience. For those who know anything about the production of khadi know how patiently the spinners and the weavers have to toil at their trade, and even so, must we have patience while we are spinning the thread of Swaraj”.

Textile artist Shelly Jyoti established ‘The Khadi March: Just Five Meters’ a show created to enhance the lives of rural weavers through persuading people to fulfill their duties by purchasing only five meters in a year. Ideal for Indian weather conditions, it keeps the wearer cool in summers and warm in winters. Khadi which was the symbol of the Indian National Movement is not handmade now but it has been mechanized using new modern charkhas. Khadi in this modern era has evolved in fashion, luxury, enterprise, and every day. The fashion industry happens to be one of the most waste and pollution generating industries. Advisor for khadi promotion 2016, designer Ritu Beri says “Khadi is green, zero waste, with zero carbon footprint, and these charkhas save electricity. The move to switch to solar charkhas makes the khadi industry a shining example of an employment-generating, eco-friendly industry.” Shani Himanshu who had created a unique combination of Khadi and denim blames the consumers and makers for not prioritizing the beauty of the fabric by charging less due to which it is considered a poor man’s fabric. Instead, he suggests that it should be priced more as every millimeter of the fabric is handspun. Khadi not only is used to make traditional kurtas but also lehengas, bags, jeans, etc the main reason why all eyes in the fashion industry are on khadi fabric.
